Welcome

Hello and welcome from Oakland, California. I’m a glass artist and instructor at The Crucible, the largest non-profit industrial arts school in the country.  I work in several glass media, including borosilicate (“hard glass”),  traditional soda-lime (“soft glass”), and kiln-formed sculpture (“warm glass”).

A glass artist’s chief tools are heat, gravity, and time. Intense focus is required to shape glass with a torch. The specialized tools and high temperatures can be intimidating at first. But when the maker is in the flow, the work is fully absorbing, even meditative.

The Bay Area is a wonderful place to teach and make glass art. The American Studio Glass Movement sparked a vibrant community of flameworkers, glass blowers, and fused glass artists — now spanning three generations. Their work is a daily inspiration to me.

I hope some visitors to this site will be encouraged to experience glass art for themselves. It’s a joy to create in community with passionate artists and makers!

Glass is a magical medium. The flow of molten glass can be coaxed to mimic natural forms — gardens under the sea, fossils in rock strata, or starlight from distant galaxies. I enjoy creating unique organic designs, and no two pieces are identical.  My work often incorporates dichroic and silver reduction glasses. These unpredictable materials add a thrilling element of chance to the ancient craft of lampworking.
